This week in our Friday series, we’re mixing it up. For the first time, we’re going Scandinavian.
We’re doing so by honouring the humble meatball. Whether the Scandinavians can truly claim it is another matter. Even Sweden’s official Twitter account admitted back in 2018 that their famous meatballs actually came from Turkey, carried home by King Charles XII in the 18th century.
Still, it’s the Swedish version — köttbullar — that’s captured the world’s imagination. (IKEA may have played its part.)
What makes them Swedish isn’t the meatball itself, but everything around it: silky cream sauce, buttery mash, sharp lingonberries, and that Nordic sense of balance. That’s exactly how we’ll be serving them this Friday — Swedish meatballs, the Cartford way.
There’s even talk of a Swedish Negroni joining the line-up.
If you’re looking for something hearty and comforting as the weather begins to cool, this is the night for you. No flat-pack instructions required.
