A Hotel With A Long Connection To Golf At Royal Lytham

Golf has long been part of life here.

Over the years, we have welcomed guests staying with us while attending some of Royal Lytham’s major championships, including:

  • The Senior Open Championship 2019

  • The Open Championship 2012

  • The Women’s British Open 2018

Tournament weeks have become familiar occasions at The Cartford Inn, with many visitors choosing to stay just outside Lytham while remaining within easy reach of the course each day.

We are golf fans ourselves — something quietly reflected throughout the inn.

Displayed on the top floor is an original Open Championship poster from Royal Lytham 1996, signed by major champion Davis Love III.

During the 1996 Open, Davis ate every day at Patrick and Julie’s first restaurant, Jack’s. Before leaving, he signed the artwork and left a few words of encouragement — a small moment from those early days that has stayed with us ever since.

The framed poster remains on display today as a reminder of Royal Lytham’s place in golfing history and of the many visitors who return to Lancashire whenever championship golf comes back to the coast.

Why Stay Outside Lytham During Tournament Week

When major championships arrive at Royal Lytham, accommodation in Lytham and St Annes fills quickly and the town becomes considerably busier throughout the week.

Many experienced golf travellers choose to stay nearby rather than directly within the event area. Staying slightly outside Lytham allows for easier arrivals and departures each day while offering a more relaxed evening environment once play has finished.

At The Cartford Inn, guests return from the course to riverside surroundings, good food, and a quieter pace before heading back to Royal Lytham the following morning.

Boutique Rooms for Women’s Open Visitors

Our individually designed bedrooms provide a relaxed and comfortable place to return to after a day following world-class golf.

Each stay includes:

  • Stylish en-suite rooms overlooking the Lancashire countryside or River Wyre

  • Proper beds and quiet surroundings for a good night’s sleep

  • Breakfast served each morning before heading to the course

  • Wi-Fi and workspace suitable for media and business guests attending the event

Whether visiting for a single tournament day or the full championship week, The Cartford Inn works well as a base for exploring both the golf and the surrounding Fylde Coast.

Dining After a Day at The Open

One of the advantages of staying outside Lytham during tournament week is having excellent food waiting at the end of the day.

The Cartford Inn is known as a destination restaurant in its own right, serving seasonal British cooking using locally sourced ingredients. Guests attending the Women’s Open can enjoy dinner and drinks without needing to travel again after returning from the course.

Many visitors choose to combine their golf trip with a relaxed evening by the river, making the stay part of the overall experience rather than simply accommodation near the event.
