Spanish Wine Dinner with Ed Adams (Master of Wine)

We are looking forward to welcoming Master of Wine Ed Adams to The Inn this April, when he will be hosting a very special dinner in our River House venue, with accompanying wines created by him under in his ‘La Bascula’ label.

Ed’s distinguished career in the wine industry began in sales and buying for several renowned merchants and importers. He became a Master of Wine in 1991 (there are currently only 356 in the world). It was in 2005 that he and South African winemaker Bruce Jack had the idea for La Bascula.

Their intention was to team up with great winemakers and wineries from the most illustrious Spanish wine regions and make small quantities of high-quality wines from Spanish grape varieties, but with progressive winemaking techniques. So, expect names like Rioja and Rueda, but expect wines which are a bit different from what you’ve tried before.

The wines will be paired with a specially created tasting menu. The dishes will be influenced by Spanish gastronomy and the cuisines of the regions which the wines come from. Ed will guide you through the wines and the tell you the La Bascula story.

Gin Tasting in The River House

Gin Tasting in The River House

Gin has enjoyed a spectacular renaissance in recent years. Once the choice tipple of eccentric old aunts, denounced as 'mother's ruin' and with a choice between Gordon's or Bombay Sapphire considered exemplary, gin's popularity has soared as the number of distilleries producing distinctive, craft spirits has burgeoned along with their marketing budgets. Now it's the de rigueur drink of aspirational facebook-foodies everywhere.

We’re celebrating gin, its resurgence and the variety of great quality gins that are now available and which we serve at the inn. Our knowledgeable bar manager Danny is hosting a series of Sunday afternoon gin masterclasses in our River House venue, where he'll deliver an informative introduction to gin and you'll get to taste and enjoy lots of top-class gins, gin-based cocktails and canapés.

Learn about the evolution of the junipery drink, how it's made, different styles, botanicals, mixers and cocktails classic and modern in the relaxed setting of our private River House venue, with views of the surrounding countryside.

Very limited places, so book now by calling 01995 670166

River House Rum Tasting

Recently, rum has come to the forefront of the ever-expanding choice for discerning drinkers. The drink has long been worthy of attention though, as the quality and variety easily matches that of other popular spirits. It has a fascinating history of craft production, it can be appreciated like a fine whisky and it’s the main ingredient of many great cocktails.

We are keen to promote rum’s status as a super spirit. So following on from our successful gin masterclasses earlier in the year, we are going to be hosting a Sunday afternoon rum tasting in our River House venue. Our knowledgable bars manager Danny will once again provide an informative introduction to rum, you’ll get to enjoy lots of high-quality rums and rum-based cocktails and there will also be canapés to demonstrate some inventive food pairings.

Learn about the history of rum, how it's made, different styles and cocktails classic and modern in the relaxed setting of our private River House venue, with views of the surrounding countryside, and bring some of the warmth of the Caribbean to a winter weekend.

Fugitive Orchestra Live

Long-term visitors to the inn will be familiar with musician and songwriter James Tattington, who used to entertain audiences with live performances when he worked here as a waiter whilst studying at university.

James has since received acclaim as ‘Fugitive Orchestra’, his solo act, which sees him combine folk, alternative, blues and jazz influences, with perceptive lyrics and creative use of the electric guitar and loop-pedals, carried by his humorously self-deprecating on-stage persona. He has recently been touring festivals in the South of England, featured on BBC introducing, and his latest EP ‘Heterochromia’ was released in July.

We are very excited to announce that James will be back at the inn later this month to perform a one-off gig as Fugitive Orchestra in our River House venue and we’d like to invite you to attend. As well as a brilliant show, we will also be serving food.

We hope you can join us for what will certainly be a captivating evening's entertainment. Tickets are limited, so book soon to avoid disappointment on 01995 670166.

The Names of the Hare

Sokie Woodhouse is a Fylde based artist who specialises in painting large murals. After graduating with a degree in the History of Modern Art, Design and Film, she set up her own business undertaking commissions for clients as diverse as the Sea Life Centre in Blackpool and North West Water, and designing and theming interiors across Europe.

Recently, Sokie has begun painting on canvasses and experimenting with portraiture. This has culminated in her latest collection of works: 'The Names of the Hare'.

'The Names of the Hare', is a collection of images of hares painted onto large canvases. Sokie became fascinated with the animals when she remembered reading a poem translated from Middle English by Seamus Heaney in which the hare is addressed repeatedly with many different names.

Sokie will be exhibiting 'The Names of the Hare' in our River House facility for one weekend only. We invite you to come along and see these impressive paintings and meet the artist.

Winemaker's Dinner with Paul Boutinot

We will be delighted to welcome Paul Boutinot (famed Anglo-French winemaker, importer and distributor) to The Cartford Inn this summer to host an exclusive dinner in our River House venue, accompanied by a range of wines from their Waterkloof vineyard in South Africa as well others from their worldwide portfolio.

Acquired in 2004 after a ten-year search by Paul, the Waterkloof estate is an independently managed, organic and biodynamic farm overlooking False Bay on the Western cape of South Africa. Since then the estate has quickly gone from strength to strength, earning numerous awards and listings on the winelists of some of the world's top restaurants including Noma, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Azurmendi and The Ledbury.

Apart from showcasing the wines, Paul (who's still involved with all areas of the business, from the vineyard to dinner table) will share the fascinating Boutinot family story and the goings-on at Waterkloof, where horses are preferred to tractors, the farming is chemical free and leopards roam the vineyards at night.

The wines will be carefully matched with a specially designed, extended tasting menu, created to exhibit the flavours of the season and the local area, as well as those typical of the wines' native South African cuisine.

We look forward to welcoming you to this very special one-off event.

For those unfamiliar, we’ll go through how to taste wine like a professional.
